The city that refuses

In the comments of my last article, the reader Jaime Morales slips a shocking concept that I find worthy of further "Valparaiso is a city that denies itself."

I quote: "... Valpo. is a city that denies itself, closes its lifts, construct buildings that do not go with her ... "

trial may seem hard, fact is that there is a widespread and silent adhering to this thought. There is an alert that grows and seeks to emphasize in a quite interesting discussion.

.- do we mean by heritage?

.- exterior walls speak of?

.- In colorful buildings with interesting architectural structure ?

.- We talk about lifts and cableways old and dilapidated?

.- De interesting neighborhoods to explore on foot?

.- Or we talk about all this, and its ingredient less visual and more active than is their own people?

Valparaiso is a city with character. Of that there can be no doubt. Everyone who visits is subjugated to the powerful attraction, and when you ask visitors what they both liked them or attracted or seduced to the point of emotion, everyone will say that is the great mix, is the surprise the encounter with the unexpected and above all, is this great character provided by the inhabitants of the city which, though invisible, can be perceived significantly.

This is the point, Valparaiso is a whole. No is a model of color corrugated. It is a city with a particular lifestyle, with a particular root, with a resounding silence of people who have made this character building the city house by house, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood and hill to hill.

Although it goes without saying that a city was built by its inhabitants and they are the ones that give it its character, oddly enough this is the point where more is forgotten in Valparaiso when looking for the empowerment tour of some of their neighborhoods. The neighborhoods are its people. If your people are going, the place loses its character, it loses what makes it so special and everything is standardized in a scenery snob arranged houses, of which only the façade, making apartment complexes or hotels or cafes.

Precisely, the beauty of Valparaiso and its neighborhoods is that it is "standard" is a special place and that is our greatest strength.

.- Then?

.- Who denies the city?

.- His own people?

.- O tourism development projects that seek to standardize commercial quality of a place? Please

. Do not get me wrong (Do not get me wrong, please!) I am not against development plans for the city. In fact, I've written before that I like both . I just want to stress this issue because it is smaller. We are all involved in this process of "trial and error", which is the search for assets linked to development of business events that will make sustainable local economy, but we must not forget the people and their lives tied to their neighborhoods. Just look for an improved local economy projecting into tourism, because we want the best coverage for the entire population.

once conversing with people of the hill Polanco. I commented on his concern to the sector development plans, which they see as an area of \u200b\u200bgreat potential for its broad appeal and his only elevator (there funicular) that subjugates its beauty and identity.

"... I do not want to happen here as was the case in the hills Concepción and Alegre, where his people, the traditional people who lived there, ended up leaving, selling their houses are now hotels and restaurants ..."

is complicated. The truth is that when a power thinking of becoming a tourist area, the surplus of homes is going to heaven and people end up selling them because the industry is passing into other hands and lost the known neighbors domestic charm. People come from other places, they buy houses they use for weekends and when they arrive, do not go there, lock themselves do not communicate, do not mix, do not get involved and keep others away. The neighborhood is not the same. Those who gave his character go. Those who generate their own activities, they are gone. Everything becomes a somewhat plastic.

sometimes feel like mant energy some places almost untouchable. No foreign tourists visit them so they do not put the eye in that sector. Keep the neighborhood Hontaneda, deposit boxes to protect the residents continue to soak his feet in a pot on the street, keep buying in your store, children continue to play in Sunday Pichanga and identity of the city is maintained.

A minor detail is not just that tourists are seeking identity and flee the places that produced noticeable. Or stay in those produced to visit the character.
The biggest attraction is the remarkable identity Valparaiso brings this character that moves so many times I have seen in my own passengers.

New places, new buildings no criteria preservation of modern architecture and square, few effective solutions with respect to our icons, are enemies of what they just sold to Valparaiso what makes it attractive, which makes it special and unique, something that touches the fiber of emotion in those who visit.

So the question hangs in the air ...

... who refuses to Valparaiso?

His own people??

O imagining who might become pregnant as a new neighborhood The Mouth "?

How do we keep places, even power, even promoting them, while protecting the largest source of city's identity, its own people, y que esta se vea beneficiada por la nueva actividad económica y que se motive a participar en ella, no solamente vendiendo sus casas a un precio que jamás habrían logrado???

Day Counter For Relationships For Blog

Ruminations

aimlessly. So my thoughts have raced recently and finally arriving at the port of my writings, set sail again without warning, leaving me abandoned on the deserted beach of the uninspired.

The truth is that I am scattered and I can not tie up an item when I'm dreaming the other. Serrat I feel like in that song where he tries to grab a idea to write to his loved and lost in simple, everyday details of their cigarettes, their roof without paint, and can not think of anything.

have not stopped Valparaiso things happen in this May, June and July, only those we dislike as closure of more elevators. However, I have written before about this topic in an almost prescient. I'm sorry, I looked the shoes, I light another cigarette and

... nothing ... (sigh)

I get a coffee and look him in the hand of the window. Rain today. A cold winter, very cold. A slow winter scarves, warm clothing and fogged glass. A gray winter or a sun that shines drawn but not

warms ... ... how sad sometimes often winters in Valparaiso. Seasons nostalgic songs are acoustic and cloudy atmospheres. Walking slowly and aimlessly, from the alleys to the coast. All spaces although some activity, look lonely. Absent faces, day after day led to inertia and fatigue. The Wheelwright walk from Baron to Portales with a couple of cyclists, walkers sleepwalkers still accompanied by the sound of the sea, the imposing facade of Santa Maria University is blurred in the mist, also withdrew his dream. The beach, gulls and pelicans in black and white and grayscale. Seeking

in my previous articles. I read and review. I reread the comments left by my readers enthusiasts looking for new winds blowing inspiration. Time with the slow burn of a candle, slowly, softly, a drop of sterile sperm falls on one side and thousands of raindrops slide down the window.

I'm surprised. Just a year ago I wrote a text on temporary Valparaiso , evoking, invoking them, and almost two weeks ago we had a strong, beautiful, violent, which made me run to enjoy the wind and rain on the face and of course for record video for one of my "Notes Callejeras." Curious was the driver of the group detected my intention, because without prior consultation of any conversation I reported stranding of a ship. He showed me from viewing Baron, his face the expectation of an early event. Filming, I returned to find me completely happy for matching and because a shipwreck in a storm is a situation worth watching. I had my holiday time as it asked and soaked as I returned to my computer to edit the note.

Shipwreck. So I feel now as I write these thoughts aimlessly. A drifting boat moved, beaten, covered over with salt foam, unable to fix the rudder to assist the next simple fact of stranding.

I light another cigarette. "Some day I shall seriously thinking about quitting" . I lost several minutes dreaming and seeking the next line, the next paragraph, the idea accordingly. It fits, to accompany, to follow the meaning and sounds good.

Work begins to return. Then I'll be on the street again with my passengers talking about Valparaiso, shaking hands, looked up, doing the "detailed plan"; haunting, being the magician that means taking from his cup hat, ladders, lifts, ups and downs, magical alleys, earthquakes and tides, dogs and cats, colors, doors and windows and a towering scaffold another bar table.

However, Valparaiso. You and I we looked at each other forever. I'm your devoted and loving. The reading your interlining and subtext. You, you look at me and give me your last love most remote corners. I must tell you that sometimes cost me a lot.

Valparaiso cost me, especially ...

... when I can not think of anything.

Playin With Feet Wife

A Wreck on the ground (Bow to the wind, head to sea, Proa to Canaveral)

I miss the Proa at Canaveral. Some time ago it was a great well-known restaurant in Valparaiso that the years were left behind. But suddenly reemerged as a captive of the Bohemian life. His nights were made famous in the city but along with that, also began a recovery in its category restaurant.

timidly began to haunt him day and I discovered that his concept sailors tied to the imagery of the port. Its decoration was anchored to old marine devices, a large exhibition of articles, ropes, barrels, and the intimidating atmosphere of real place. Not only its decorative objects were related to fishing activity, but those who worked there had been linked to the sea. The place was not lying. It was a deep and honest truth.

I began to get a manager Pedro Iglesias, captain's hat and pipe, affable and warm welcome. The I started talking about the organization that had Proa. It main deck spoke, referring to her room, deck and steerage to the first floor. He also explained where they came from all objects that were exhibited there. As he told me, was foreman of the training ship Esmeralda and was aware of each of the names that make up the masts of tall ships. With some models in its library taught me the complicated nomenclature of masts, sails, and sleeve lengths, port and starboard, fore and aft. Not for nothing was known to frequent the place as "The Captain"

I started to take my group of passengers to bow and the effect, after a walk in Valparaiso was shocking. Travelers congratulated me because they had come to a place of truth, not a model, not a stage. If you wanted a local place deeply, because there you had and from their windows, while dining and drinking, you could see the port and its activity. They were also guests, characters typical of the sector that had washed up on the Bow for its originality. No missing "girls" who always traffic in the neighborhood. Valparaiso in full. Bohemian atmosphere with its mystique to the brink of danger, at the border, the famous and feared seafood Buenos Aires bohemia.

The arrival at the place with my passengers began to have certain rituals that caused a great effect. Climbing by their scales and appeared as Captain, my group stopped and sonorous voice and ceremonious said: "Captain, request permission to address" Then Peter answered: "Permission granted." Always a big hug and greetings of friendship to all who worked there and the faces of thrill of all passengers so outdated solemnity.

have seen a Dutch dance cueca?? Well, with local musicians will sing the Jewel of the Pacific, boleros, Peruvian waltzes, tangos and of course we started to dance cueca and even danced with Captain Cook. Then took out the ball to passengers, without any fear, dance adapt our local customers while climbing on tables to pat the bravery of the "gringo" or "gringa" de rigueur. It was in those moments where replicábamos practically calcábamos old marine atmosphere of the bohemian mixed with foreigners and Chileans each other, trying to understand signs in bad English and bad English.

Because

called "Proa al Canaveral, Pedro??

I answered the Captain: The owner had the original founder occurrence that if this restaurant was really a boat, its bow facing north sail in a straight line just to get "Cape Canaveral "in the U.S.. I could not stop laughing and when I remember the creative genius still makes me laugh. A good place must have stories to tell and the Bow, from the barrels that served as desks, through articles and ornaments from boats, scuba diving, navigation maps papering the walls, huge paintings depicting place, to the old piano out of tune, everything seemed to invite all winks here for you to sit by his side to hear their stories, to call at a table to set sail in the stories.

there also spent entire afternoons talking with my good friend. Sustaining local was nothing easy, no I always arrived with tourists, there was very often and not enough customers. With all the magic that was also the fact the account was wrong. Visit pirates only pirate bars. Although the nights were lively and several generations of the university became a pin, which provided dance night held no so the restaurant did not produce. The Proa sailing heeled always a heavy burden and impossible to cut. For an ocean

is much easier to deal with a storm to stay adrift. When just the wind and the sails do not swell, the ship is not moving and everything is stopped, paused, aimlessly.

Finally the wrecked Proa and closed and we sailed it landed us to add new routes in our charts. It has re-opened as an evening partying, but the restaurant remains closed.

I do not like going to the nostalgia for writing from her, in Valparaiso is a hackneyed action which usually falls on the topic of "All the past was better" concept to flee or at least looked at with suspicion, it holds a certain immobility, lethargy and listlessness that I dislike. However, I have not stopped thinking about this place and remember your porteñísimo environment.

My longing is a starting point. Bicentennial Regatta we could enjoy the beautiful sailboats docked in the port and its beautiful navigation farewell in front of the city. I was lucky enough to navigate through this parade of yachts and as I did and I enjoyed it, thought I should write something about this event. Only my mind was writing any articles about the race and if, wrapped in memories of the Proa al Canaveral talks on sailboats and the lessons that the captain gave me the names of the various elements that make up the rigging.

I not been a good student, usually end up confusing the names of the rags, jib, gaff, scandalous and the sticks, ratchets, and mizzen, and also a few sailboats as Europe and Sagres.

How well would have been enjoying the sailboats from the windows of the restaurant, then show them all together to discuss the details and differences.

Where will the "crew" of Proa?? No idea. Just know that Captain Pedro Iglesias Andean pampas tides changed and now works in the mines of the northern desert. But if it appear by the door looking for a sailing crew to bohemia, I am ready to embark.

Captain, permission to board.
